5 Lessons I Learned as a VA That Will Prepare You for 2025

When I started with remote work, opportunities for Filipinos were limited. Platforms like Odesk (now Upwork) were among the few available options, but I didn’t have the bank account required to receive payments. So, I got creative. I found my first clients through Craigslist, received payments via PayPal, and sent them to a friend in Australia, who then transferred the money to me through Western Union.

At the time, there weren’t any YouTube videos or tutorials to guide me on what to do or how to do it. I learned the hard way—trial and error, lots of mistakes, and unfortunately, getting scammed. But those challenges taught me resilience and discernment, skills that are invaluable in this field.

Fast forward to today, things have changed extensively. VA tutorials and resources now flood the internet, making it easier for beginners to learn the ropes. But while the tools and guidance have improved, the core lessons I’ve learned remain essential.

As we approach 2025, I want to share five key lessons that shaped my journey as a VA. Whether you’re just starting out or thinking about diving into this career, these insights will give you the foundation to succeed and thrive in this exciting field.

1. Time Management is Your Best Friend

Managing overlapping deadlines is one of the trickiest parts of being a VA, but it’s a skill that can make or break your career. My approach? Be upfront with your clients. If I need an extension, I communicate early and honestly. Beyond that, I prioritize tasks by importance, ensuring that what’s urgent gets done first. This approach keeps me productive and builds trust with clients.

2. Communication Can Make or Break Your Success

I didn’t just wake up one day knowing how to write professional emails or proper correspondence. I honed this skill through self-study and research, diving into guides and practicing until it felt natural. Today, this ability helps me set clear expectations with clients, respond to inquiries effectively, and maintain a professional tone in every interaction. If you’re just starting out, don’t be afraid to invest time in learning this—it pays off!

3. Tech-Savviness is a Must

While tools like CRM systems and design platforms are essential, I want to highlight a skill I never thought I’d master: bookkeeping tasks. It wasn’t a tool I had to learn but a discipline. Tracking finances, managing invoices, and maintaining records taught me precision and accountability. These are invaluable skills that can set you apart as a VA.

4. Adaptability is the Key to Thriving

Transitioning into social media management was one of my biggest career leaps. I achieved it by enrolling in free and paid courses and practising on my own. I treated myself as my client, creating social media strategies as if I were building a brand from scratch. This mindset gave me the confidence to pitch my services to real clients and expand my skill set.

5. Self-Care and Boundaries Prevent Burnout

Burnout is real. I’ve learned the hard way that it's essential to set boundaries before accepting the workload. I fixed this by becoming upfront with my clients about my limitations. For example, I clearly inform them when I’m in the office, stepping out, or completely off duty. These clear boundaries have not only improved my work-life balance but also strengthened my relationships with clients.

These five lessons aren’t just about succeeding as a VA—they’re about thriving as you navigate a rapidly changing industry. Whether you’re just starting or looking to level up your skills, I hope these insights inspire you to take charge of your journey.
